Notes on the text and its history
This app presents only the core I Ching text — all secondary commentary has been set aside. The intention is a more personal encounter with the oracle: the imagery and poetry of the original speak directly, without interpretation imposed between you and the text.
The text used here comes from Richard Wilhelm's 1924 German translation, rendered into English in 1950 by Cary F. Baynes. It remains the most widely read Western edition of the I Ching. You can read the full Wilhelm–Baynes translation at this archive.
Eliot Weinberger has written a lucid and wide-ranging account of the I Ching's long history in the West, published in the New York Review of Books. It is an excellent introduction for those new to the text and rewarding for those already familiar with it.
